Solution
EMC ® PowerPath ® Migration Enabler is a host-based migration tool that allows you to migrate data between storage systems. PowerPath Migration Enabler takes advantage of PowerPath technology and works in conjunction with another underlying technology, such as EMC Open Replicator for Symmetrix or EMC Invista ®. PowerPath Migration Enabler is independent of PowerPath multi-pathing technology and does not require that you use PowerPath for multi-pathing.
Benefit
When migrating data with PowerPath Migration Enabler, the data continues to be accessible to host applications while the migration takes place. Application disruption is minimal or nonexistent. The level of disruption depends on whether you are migrating data from a pseudo- or a native-named device, and whether PowerPath is installed on the host. If PowerPath is not installed, then a disruption may be necessary to install PowerPath.
Technology
EMC Open Replicator - Open Replicator for Symmetrix as the underlying technology, data is copied from the source logical unit, through the fabric to the target logical unit. Software on the Symmetrix system where the target logical unit resides controls the data movement. The mirroring of I/O to keep the source and target logical units synchronized throughout the migration process is performed by PowerPath Migration Enabler on the host.
Invista encapsulation - Invista encapsulates the source device name. To migrate data to an Invista Virtual Volume, first create a Virtual Volume, and then ensure the host can see this volume. The original Symmetrix or CLARiiON element is the source logical unit in the migration, and the Invista Virtual Volume is the target. |
